Beading is an art of making decorative items or pieces by attaching beads to one another with the help of beading tools such as cutters, needles and threads. Beading demonstrates the creator’s own sense of creativity and artistic flavor, and the resulting products are ornamental by nature.

The art of beading is an important part of every culture and tradition. Every country and community has its own version of beading. In ancient times, beads and beaded objects such as clothes, ornaments, and jewelry were used for exchange of food, weapons and other materials. They were also used as gifts during festivals and religious ceremonies. The art and techniques of beading have been passed on from one generation to the next.

Beads are made of different materials like metal, wood, glass, precious and semi-precious stones. There are no hard and fast rules for learning this art. Everyone has his or her personal preference in technique which helps in creating the final product.

Learning how to bead well requires a lot of time and effort. It’s important that you practice often: it is a hands-on process. The duration of the beading project will depend on the designs and the types of projects and beads. Some of the common types of beads are seed beads, crystal beads, transparent beads, Venetian beads, opaque beads, donut beads, handmade beads, tension beads, galvanized beads, delica beads, Aurora Borealis beads, matte finish beads, gold lined beads, silver lined beads and lots more. Every type has its own distinctive features and characteristics.

Tools are also very important. Many people use only a limited number of tools for the operation. But, you will need high quality tools to yield high quality and delicate pieces.

As a novice beader, it’s recommended to buy all the supplies you will need to begin with from the beads store, hobby shops and crafts store. The threads being used must be strong enough to support and carry the beads. Since you’re only just starting out, you might want to start with simple projects such as earrings, to complex projects like floral designing, where skills required are more advanced. As with any other activity, patience and practice are the keys to success in beading well.

Proper care and attention must be paid to the color combination of the work. Your work will shine above the rest if it is supported by an aesthetic color sense. Do not forget to take rest after every 20 to 30 minutes of work. Perpetual work, without any break, for long hours may prove to be strenuous for your hands, fingers and even your eyes. Your fingers and hands may suffer from bouts of stiffness accompanied by pain also. Your eyes may feel tired from continuous focus on your work.
